High School Junior Asks Herself to Prom - and She Says Yes!

Lily Bilgrey, 17, said she was tired of seeing her friends worked up over how they were being asked to prom, or whether they would go with a date.

If you want something done right, sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands.

That appears to be what this New Jersey teen had in mind when she asked herself to prom.

“The whole promposal scene was lacking a bit of comic relief,” 17-year-old Lily Bilgrey of Freehold said. “I thought that I could help with that.”

Bilgrey, a high school junior at SciCore Academy, told InsideEdition.com that she was tired of seeing over-the-top invitations to what she called “a glorified school dance” on social media.

So she decided to poke fun at the elaborate ritual by posting a series of photos, in which she appeared to ask herself to prom.

"I didn’t want to miss out on the fun promposal so I decided to ask myself," Bilgrey said. “I knew I would say yes.”

Bilgrey said her high school does not actually hold a prom for their students, but she wanted to take part in the teenage tradition anyway.

"I really want people to think that it’s not about who you go with or how you get asked — it’s about going and having fun,” she explained, adding that she knew many students who declined going to prom just because they didn’t have a date. “It’s about experiencing a rite of passage for teen life.”

And to follow through with her promise, Bilgrey said she will not be bringing a date to her school’s Spring Formal, but instead will be going by herself.

“I don’t think it’s about the date,” she said. “I think it’s about having fun.”
