Stephen Vigil, 17, even had the DJ play her favorite song, "Can't Help Falling In Love," by Elvis Presley.
You’ll never forget the person you take to your high school prom, which is why this Virginia teen decided to ask his terminally ill 91-year-old grandmother to be his date.
Stephen Vigil, a junior at Stafford High School in Fredericksburg, told InsideEdition.com the decision to celebrate the milestone with his grandma Julia Vigil Jarman, 91, became obvious when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February, and given just six months to live.

“When I first got the news, I was devastated,” Vigil said InsideEdition.com. “Ever since I was a baby, we’ve been like best friends.”
When he and his grandmother started chatting about his upcoming junior prom, she mentioned she never went to her own.
That’s when Vigil, who originally planned to go stag with some friends, decided to ask his grandmother to be his date on the big day.
“She was surprised," he said, laughing. "She was like, ‘Why me? I didn’t want to bring up the cancer or anything. [I told her,] ‘I just want to take you, grandma.'"
When Vigil asked his school’s principal Joseph Lewis, he was happy to allow the special request.
“Typically because it is a high school prom, we really don’t let anyone into prom past age 21,” Lewis told InsideEdition.com. “This was a bit different. I think it was important for Stephen and I really wanted to make it happen for both of them.”
Grandma Julia was even presented a tiara and a sash, and was welcomed by students, teachers and other staff at the school.

“There were a lot of tears that night when she came,” Lewis said. “This school is family. We treat each other as family, and we take care of one another. This is just one example of where we’re able to do that.”
“I had the DJ play her favorite Elvis song, ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love,’ and we were dancing to that,” Vigil added. “She almost had me crying when she was singing it to me.”
Vigil said he and his family are now looking forward to spending quality time with his grandmother.
“We’re just taking it day by day,” he explained. “She’s still the same grandma she’s always been.”
