'This Is a New Low': Woman Stole Cemetery Mementos to Decorate Her Home, Sheriff Says

Lisa Corcoran, 44, is accused of taking more than 100 pieces of property, including a memorial bench, from two graveyards.

A Michigan woman has been charged with felony theft after allegedly stealing items from cemeteries to decorate her home, authorities said.

Lisa Corcoran, 44, is accused of taking more than 100 pieces of property, including a memorial bench, from two graveyards, according to Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.

“To steal from the dead is an unimaginable act that defies description,” Pickell said at press conference Thursday in Flint. “This is a new low.”

Corcoran was arrested after a citizen called deputies to report a woman had stolen flowers from the porches and backyards of a condo development. She had taken down the woman’s license plate number, Pickell said.

Deputies later pulled over that vehicle, which was being driven by Corcoran, and discovered flowers and other stolen items, the sheriff said.

At her home, investigators seized 188 items that Corcoran used as decorations, including the bench, covered in ceramic tiles, and other mementos.

“We’re hoping that this will be able to restore some peace for the loved ones,” Pickell said.

Deputies are trying to identify the objects and determine their rightful owners, he said.

Corcoran is being held in lieu of $5,000 cash bail.
