After Daughter Calls Her Fat, Mom Teaches a Lesson in Body Positivity

Instead of shaming her daughter, Alison Kimmey saw it as a learning experience.

A 4-year-old girl caught her mother completely off guard when she was heard calling the woman fat, but ultimately decided to use the experience to teach her daughter a lesson.

Alison Kimmey says she wasn't prepared for what she heard her daughter, Campbell, say last week after a visit to the beach near their home in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

“I heard my daughter say to my son that mama is fat,” she recalled to Inside Edition. “I needed a moment. I really did.”

Over the years, Kimmey has struggled with her weight. She's been anywhere from a size 4 to an 18.

“Being a plus-size woman, I face fat phobia all the time,” she said. “I could have just shamed them, but instead I decided to explain that we all have fat but we are not defined by it.”

The mom, who is a motivational speaker and blogs about positive body image, decided to use her daughter’s jab as a learning experience.

She tweeted a photo of her and her daughter in bathing suits with the words, "My daughter called me fat today."

The post quickly went viral.

“It feels good when you finally have the confidence in your body and to feel comfortable,” she said.

She says she's continuing the conversation with her daughter about weight and stretch marks, which they call “glitter strips.”

And the message is definitely getting through to her daughter, who told Inside Edition: “Everyone is fat. It’s okay to have fat."
