Woman Holds Gender Reveal Party for Her Rescued Pet Chicken

The chick pecked its beak through a cupcake to find out what gender it was.

A woman in California has thrown her newly rescued pet chicken a gender reveal party.

Funky Chicken, who is about 4 months old, was rescued July 20 and the gender was unknown until recently.

“You don’t know until later,” Funky Chicken’s owner, Darcy Smith, of Vacaville, told InsideEdition.com. “They’re either going to ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ or lay an egg.”

A few days ago, Smith said Funky began to chant in the morning and that’s when she knew she had to throw a gender reveal, especially since followers of Funky Chicken’s Facebook page have desperately wanted to know.

“We took a poll, [in] which most people thought [Funky] was a girl and then we led up to it,” she said.

Smith also noted that Funky had pointed feathers as opposed to round, which is an indication of gender.

With the help of a friend and her daughter, Jessalyn, 11, the celebration, posted to Funky's Facebook page, was a success.

In the reveal video, Funky is seen pecking at a cupcake baked by Jessalyn with pink and blue decorations and an “Oh Baby” sign made of balloons.

In the middle of the cupcake was blue coloring, indicating the chicken is a rooster and not a hen.

Fellow chickens on the ranch gathered for the celebration, eating cupcakes on blue and pink plates. Also living on Smith's 20-acre ranch are seven rescue cats, three rescue dogs and four horses.

“It was very funny, but it was cute,” Smith said. “They all loved the cupcakes. I’ve never given them anything sweet like that, but it was a hit.”

Funky was rescued from a home in Rancho Cordova, California and was taken to Sacramento SPCA for recovery.

He arrived in poor condition with little feathers and a skinny, malnourished body.

But now he's healthy and appears to be happy in Smith's care.

“He is absolutely, totally precious and he snuggles,” Smith told InsideEdition.com. “He’s a love.”

Funky Chicken also takes trips with Smith to wine tastings, festivals and fruit stands. He even gained the title of “assistant farm manager” at their ranch.

Smith says she and Jessalyn enjoy their time with Funky and love taking part in activities with him.

On Funky's Facebook page, Smith keeps followers aware of the chicken's adventures, as well as promote animal adoption.

“I hope by posting Funky and his videos and how sweet it is, that it will bring awareness to adoption and rescue of animals of all kinds,” she said.

She added: “There are so many animals out there that need a home."
