"Nobody should be made to feel like a freak or a weirdo," said Weir.
Johnny Weir is lashing out at TV commentators, who compared his Olympic skating performance, to Brokeback Mountain, and made homophobic remarks about his flamboyant skating costumes.
It started with two Australian sports commentators. One said, "They don't leave anything in the locker room those blokes, do they?" Followed by the other commentator saying, "And they don't leave anything in the closet either."
Then spread to Canadian TV, where two french-speaking analysts questioned whether Weir "should compete in the women's competition." One French commentator said, "Johnny Weir, feminine, feminine!"
"I felt very defiant when I saw these comments," said Weir.
Weir is known for his over-the-top personality and feminine styling touches. He designs his own skating outfits, adding pink tassels and sequins, and he's posed in high heels for a magazine layout. At the Olympics he donned a crown of roses when he left the ice.
But last night it was all business for Weir. He wasted no time in addressing one of the more hurtful comments, that he should undergo "gender testing."
"You know, I grew my beard out just to show that indeed I am a man, at the end of the day," said Weir.
