Massive boulders were seen tumbling down El Capitan, the park's majestic rock formation. It was the second day in a row that Mother Nature unleashed its fury with a rock slide and filled the valley below with tons of debris.
Jim and Rachel Evans, of Naples, Fla., found themselves in the middle of the crisis Thursday as rocks rained down on their car and crashed through the sunroof.
“All of a sudden we heard something like thunder,” she recalled to Inside Edition. “My husband reached up and said, ‘My head, my head.'"
The dust poured in so quickly that they couldn't outrun it.
"I thought we were going to die," Rachel added
A rescue team loaded Jim into a medevac chopper that flew him to the hospital.
Visiting El Capitan was on the couple's bucket list. And just before their trip, they had survived the wrath of Hurricane Irma.
Heavy rains in the area are believed to be the cause of the rock slides.
