New Book Claims Obama Marriage Was On Brink Of Divorce

Was the Obamas marriage once so rocky that divorce was in the picture? That is the claim made by a new book about President Obama. INSIDE EDITION explains.

Was the Obama marriage once so rocky, Michelle actually had divorce papers drawn up?

That's the claim being made in the controversial new book, The Amateur by Ed Klein, a Vanity Fair contributor and former editor of The New York Times Magazine.

Klein claimed the Obama marriage was on the brink of divorce back in 2000.

Barack Obama had just suffered a humiliating defeat when he ran for Congress in Chicago. According to Klein, Michelle, then a stay-at-home mom to their first daughter, Malia, had warned him not to enter the election and was furious about their money worries.

"As a result, their marriage was on the rocks," Klein wrote, "and Obama confided to friends that he and Michelle were talking about divorce."

"Michelle actually had divorce papers drawn up," Klein quoted one of Michelle's friends as saying.

A White House spokesman accused Klein of making up facts to sell books.

INSIDE EDITION's Paul Boyd asked Klein, "What do you say to your critics?"

Klein said, "This book is in no way an effort to denigrate him as a good human being."

The Obama's have admitted that they went through a rough patch.

Michelle said to the New York Times Magazine, "Marriage is hard. But going into it no one ever tells you that. They just tell you, 'Do you love him?' 'What's the dress look like?'"
