Cops say the gunman threw a teargas canister during a midnight showing of the movie, then opened fire. A three-month-old baby was shot at point-blank range.
Authorities have a suspect in custody. This is what we know: His name is James Holmes. He's 24 years old. He was raised in San Diego.
His mother was reportedly quoted as saying, "You have the right person. I need to call the police. I need to fly out to Colorado."
Police say Holmes was found outside the theater, carrying a knife, rifle and a handgun, and wearing a bulletproof vest.
The horrific shooting happened only 20 miles from the scene of that other Colorado tragedy, the massacre at Columbine High School in 1999 where thirteen people were killed.
