Shellie Zimmerman spoke out about the shocking announcement that she's divorcing George Zimmerman. Divorce papers obtained by INSIDE EDITION say "the marriage is irretrievably broken."
She said, “I have been married to a man for seven years and I don't really think I know him at all. I stood by my husband through everything and I kind of feel like he left me with a bunch of broken glass that I’m supposed to now assemble and make a life.”
She told Good Morning America her husband feels "invincible" since he was found not guilty less than two months ago of the murder of Trayvon Martin.
Just this past Tuesday, he was charged with speeding and caught on a police surveillance camera a few miles from where Martin was killed. It's the second time cops have pulled him over since his trial.
“He's making some reckless decisions,” said Shellie.
George's lawyer, Mark O'Mara spoke about the impending divorce on CNN. He said, "It is sad that the situation that existed for 16 months in the public eye has caused another destruction of a relationship."
Last week, Shellie pleaded guilty to perjury for lying about the couple's finances when he was granted bail.
Now, she's asking for an equal portion of the couple's assets and sole custody of their two dogs.
She said, "I have supported him for so long and I have neglected myself for too long, and I am begining to feel empowered again."
