Heather Mack is the teenage American heiress being held on the paradise island of Bali and suspected in the horrifying murder of her wealthy mom.
The battered body of 62-year-old Sheila von Wiese-Mack of Chicago was found stuffed inside a blood-smeared metal suitcase. Her 19-year-old daughter, Heather, is being questioned by police along with Heather's 21-year-old boyfriend, Tommy Schaeffer, who is an aspiring rapper.
They had been staying at the luxury St. Regis resort in Bali, considered one of the most breathtaking and exotic vacation spots in the world, where single rooms cost up to $1,400 a night.
Authorities believe Heather and her boyfriend stuffed Sheila into the suitcase and put it in a taxi outside the St. Regis and then disappeared. Blood could be seen on the taxi's bumper.
They were arrested hours later in a cheap hotel six miles away. Both tried to hide their faces from cameras.
Heather and her boyfriend gave police a bizarre story, claiming they were kidnapped by a gang and it was the gang who murdered Sheila Mack. But police say surveillance video shows Heather and her mom arguing in the hotel lobby the day before the murder.
HLN's Jane Velez-Mitchell told INSIDE EDITION, "This is so grueling, that if you put it in a movie, people would say it would be over the top. The idea of stuffing a women's bloody, battered body into a suitcase and then putting that luggage into a taxi cab and saying 'Bye-bye!'"
Sheila von Wiese-Mack is the widow of a successful composer. Until recently, they lived in a suburban Chicago mansion. Former neighbors say she had a tempestuous relationship with her daughter. Police were called to the mansion 86 times over the last 10 years. The calls were mostly domestic disputes and missing persons reports.
The boyfriend, Tommy Schaeffer performed under the name Tommy Exx. His rap videos are posted on YouTube. He also posted this message on Facebook before leaving the United States: “Leaving... Might not come backkk!”
Neither the daughter nor boyfriend has been charged. Under Indonesian law, a suspect can be held up to 20 days.
