Military Widow Holds Gender Reveal on Veterans Day With Late Husband's Comrades

She thought it would be perfect timing.

A month after a Cassie Lohrey’s husband died in a military plane crash, she found out she was pregnant

“I so was happy, very excited and blessed to have a piece of him forever,” Lohrey told InsideEdition.com.

Lohrey married Ryan Lohrey, who served as a Navy corpsman, in June. A month later, he was killed along with 15 others while flying to a Michigan training base.

Amid tragedy, Lohrey found hope.

Just weeks later, the 34-year-old discovered she was pregnant. The couple had discussed wanting to have kids as soon as they got married, Lohrey said.

“It was just a silver lining in a tragic situation," Lohrey said. "I was shocked.”.

When Lohrey realized that she would be finding out the gender of the baby right around Veterans Day, she asked some of the military men who had served with her husband to take part in her gender reveal.

“I knew there wasn’t a better time to reveal than on Veterans Day,” Lohrey said. “They were all people he worked with closely. They have been supportive of me and the baby.”

In a touching video of the moment, Lohrey and several Navy and Marine officers stood in her North Carolina backyard with the American flag behind them.

“Cassie Lohrey, we do hereby appoint you impregnated by Ryan Lohrey and congratulate you on your soon to be baby…” one of the servicemen said jokingly as several officers popped open containers and pink confetti spewed out.

Lohrey’s baby girl is due in March 2018.

“It was surprise to everybody there,” Lohrey said. "I feel like I am on cloud nine since it happened. It's something to look forward to and we stay positive for daddy and make him proud.”

Lohrey said her baby will have no shortage of uncles in the future.

“They are already protective of her,” Lohrey said. “They’ve been very supportive ever since the accident. From Day 1, I call them for anything and they are there for me in the drop of a dime.”

The mom-to-be has started a GoFundMe to help with the future baby girl.
