Mythbusters Hosts Apologize for Cannonball Misfire
The hosts of the TV show Mythbusters are speaking out for the first time about their cannonball experiment that went horribly wrong.
Mythbusters co-host Adam Savage said, "This is the worst thing we can imagine happening. We are deeply sorry for this happening. "
Savage and co-host Jamie Hyneman actually went to the house that was hit by the cannonball to personally apologize to the homeowners.
"I can't imagine how I would feel in his position. I would want to be reassured that this will be taken care of and this will never happen again, and that's exactly what he asked us and that's what we assured him," said Savage.
The cannon, fired on a military firing range near San Francisco, was supposed to hit a barrier of water barrels and cinder blocks. But the thirty pound, grapefruit-sized ball missed the target and flew 700 yards over a hill and went into a residential neighborhood.
It bounced in front of one house, slammed through the front door, bounced upstairs, went out the wall. It then went across the street and ricocheted off the roof of another house, before finally smashing into the window of a mini-van.
"What we think at this point was that this involved something known as muzzle lift. The cannon which was aimed at a straight and low projectory right into our barriers somehow aimed upward" said Hyneman.
Neighbors who came out to survey the damage are still stunned that they came under attack from a runaway cannonball.
"I can't imagine that in residential areas were actually allowing them to shoot off cannons that could clear a hill a half mile, go through two exterior walls and probably three or four internal walls, go across the street, go through two more roofs and end up in a mini-van. Yeah, that is probably not right in a residential area," said one angry neighbor.
