Hero Retraces Route He Took as He Chased Texas Gunman: 'This Guy Was Just Going Relentless'
26 people were killed and more than 20 were injured.
After Texas church gunman Devin Kelley entered the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs Sunday and opened fire, he was chased by two civilians through the tiny Texas town.
Kelley, 26, fired numerous shots on unsuspecting parishioners during their morning service at about 11:30 a.m., killing 26 and leaving 20 others injured.
Stephen Willeford, 55, shot and wounded the gunman outside the church, but as Kelley jumped into his car to flee, Willeford and Johnnie Langendorff, who was just passing by his in truck at the time, gave chase.
Langendorff retraced the route of that high-speed pursuit for Inside Edition.
Langendorff said that Willeford jumped into his truck and said the man he had just shot was behind the massacre at the church.
“I said, ‘Let’s go!’” Langendorff recalled to Inside Edition. “I tried to maintain between 90-95 miles an hour because this guy was just going relentless and that is when he hit the guardrail on the opposite side of the road, lost control of his vehicle, hit the bar ditch. Once he hit the bar ditch, I came to a complete stop.”
The two men, who were in contact with police during the chase, guarded Kelley’s vehicle until authorities arrived on the scene minutes later.
Kelley was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound behind the wheel of his vehicle.
