Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Divorcing

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have announced they are getting a divorce, and some say Tom may have been blindsided by the whole thing. INSIDE EDITION has the scoop.

It's over for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. After five years of marriage, one of the world's most famous couples is getting a divorce.

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," says Holmes' attorney. "Katie's primary concern right now remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Tom Cruise released a statement of his own, and he sounds blindsided by the divorce. His rep says, "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children."

Holmes reportedly listed irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, and she is asking for sole custody of Suri.

Family law attorney told INSIDE EDITION, "That means she basically does not want to share in making decisions with Tom at all. She wants to have complete control over that child."

It all started with such a bang. Who could forget Tom Cruise jumping for joy on Oprah Winfrey's couch.

A whirlwind romance followed. The pair had a daughter together, Suri, and eventually wed in an Italian castle in 2006.

But trouble has been brewing for the couple this past year. Katie didn't attend Cruise's Rock of Ages premieres in either New York or Los Angeles.

And just this week, their 6-year-old daughter Suri was seen throwing tantrums on the streets of New York. And Katie was photographed walking the streets all by herself looking miserable. Katie has reportedly been planning the divorce for some time and her parents have flown in to New York to console her.

Cruise is in Iceland today filming a sci-fi movie in a space suit. His 50th birthday is coming up on Tuesday. Katie is just 33. There is a 16-year age difference between them.

Leslie Messer of People magazine told INSIDE EDITION, "One reason the split was so shocking, was because just a few weeks ago Tom told People about his birthday plans, which all seemed to revolve a bit around Katie. He said that on his actual birthday, they'd spend a low-key day in New York and then the whole family would travel with him to Iceland where he's filming a movie."

There was also tension over religious differences. Holmes was a devout Catholic before she married Cruise, but he converted her to Scientology.

The couple reportedly has a prenup that gives Holmes $3 million for each year they were married. And now everyone is wondering what will become of little Suri?
