Suspected Burglar is Eaten By 11-Foot Alligator After Hiding Near Florida Lake

Matthew Riggins was found partially eaten in a Brevard County, Florida lake in November after police say he fled from deputies while burglarizing homes.

A Florida man suspected of burglarizing homes met his end last month after he hid from authorities near a lake and was killed by an alligator, police say.

Police say Matthew Riggins told a friend that he and a friend were going to rob some Brevard County homes on November 13.

That same night, suspicious men were reported to police to be walking behind a neighborhood's homes. Sheriff's deputies arrived and gave chase to the suspects, who got away.

Days later, a man's body was discovered in Barefoot Bay Lake near an 11-foot alligator. On Monday, the body was positively identified as Riggins'.

Florida Fish and Wildlife caught the gator, which was euthanized.

According to reports “forensic examination of the alligator located remains consistent with the injuries to Riggins inside the alligator’s stomach.”

“So at that point, we had a belief that he was probably attacked by the alligator when he was trying to get away from police,” Maj. Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office told WFTV.

Riggins' alleged accomplice has been located by authorities, but is reportedly being uncooperative with the investigation.
