Boy is Hailed a Hero After Stopping Bus When Driver Fell Unconscious

Cory Lewis jumped into action when he saw his school bus heading towards a line of pine trees.

A middle school student is being hailed a hero after stopping a bus full of children when the driver fell unconscious.

Cory Lewis was riding the bus from Fairgrove Middle School in Lumberton, North Carolina in December with 50 other students when a car slammed into the back of their bus, WBTW reported.

Cory saw the driver had fallen from her seat. The bus was headed towards pine trees - so he jumped into action.

"I got up from off the ground, I went up here and I hit the brake," he said.

He said he knew what to do thanks to his mom, Lisa Locklear, who has been a bus driver for more than 20 years. He learned what to do after helping her with her safety checks, WBTW reported.

“I just feel in my heart that God put him on that bus for a reason,” his proud mom said.

The Robeson County School Board honored the teen at a meeting this week. As well as the students on the bus, the driver of the car and the driver of the bus were not injured.
