Woman Who Found Missing Jogger on Side of Road: If She Was Willing to Get Hit by a Car, She Needed Help
The police dispatches made during the discovery of the 34-year-old mother found on the side of a California road on Thanksgiving have been released.
“She is heavily battered and it is a confirmed kidnapping,” an officer said in the dispatch.
Mother-of-two Sherri Papini, vanished three weeks ago and was discovered on the side of the road injured and bound by restraints Thursday morning. She was rescued after flagging down cars at 4:30 a.m., 150 miles from her home in Northern California.
One of the police officers said: “She is chained to something. She's chained with a quarter-inch heavy chain and hose clamps on her wrists.”
Alison Sutton, the woman who saw Papini and called 911 spoke to Good Morning America Monday.
“I saw a woman, a woman with long blonde hair by the side of the road frantically waving what looked like a shirt,” she recalled. “I figured if she was willing to risk being hit by a car she must really need help.”
Papini was taken to a police station in Redding, California where she was reunited with her husband, Keith.
She described her captors as two Hispanic women who were driving a dark SUV when they dumped her at the side of the road. They were armed with a handgun.
A statement from the Shasta County Police Officers said: "Currently we have no reason to disbelieve Mrs. Papini's story. She had been assaulted."
Her husband believed she was abducted after she disappeared November 2, and offered a $50,000 reward for her safe return.
His wife was last seen jogging on the Old Oregon Trail at about 2 p.m. after dropping her kids off at day care.
Keith reported her disappearance to the police when he returned to an empty house that afternoon, suspicious that his wife and two kids, ages 2 and 4, were not home to greet him after work.
Keith then called his children’s day care, and was told Sherri hadn’t picked up the kids.
After searching the home, Keith told investigators he used the “Find my iPhone” app to locate his wife’s cell phone about a mile from the home. Later, her ear buds and strands of her long blonde were discovered along the route.
