Playing Have You Seen Her? Red Panda Vanishes From Virginia Zoo Overnight

A search is underway for a red panda that vanished from the Virginia Zoo Monday, according to reports.

Zookeepers checked the panda’s habitat Tuesday morning and discovered that “Sunny” was nowhere to be found, officials said in a report.

The 19-month-old animal is not considered aggressive, but zookeepers are hoping she is still on the zoo grounds.

“Red pandas are reddish-brown in color, with thick fur and a long tail, and similar in size to a raccoon. They can be seen on the ground, but typically are found in trees,” the zoo said.

Norfolk police are helping with the search for Sunny, using a thermal camera.

Sunny came to the Virginia Zoo in May 2016 from Front Royal, the Smithsonian’s Conservation Biology Institute.

This isn’t the first time a Red Panda has escaped from the zoo.

In 2015, “Fluffy” escaped from the Sequoia Park Zoo in California.  A resident later spotted the animal near her home and she was coaxed down from a tree and returned to the zoo.
