Thailand Cave Rescue Is Latest in Long History of Mine and Well Mishaps

July 13, 2018

The plight and daring rescue of the boys' soccer team trapped in a Thailand cave has captured the world's attention. It's the latest entry in a long history of people being trapped deep within the earth. In August of 2010, a cave-in trapped 33 Chilean miners hundreds of feet underground. In 1949, a 3-year-old named Kathy Fiscus fell nearly 100 feet into an abandoned well. One of the best-known stories of its day involved Floyd Collins, who became trapped in a Kentucky cave crawlspace in 1925.
