Backlash Surfaces Over Arnold Schwarzenegger Interview
Reaction to that bombshell Arnold Schwarzenegger 60 Minutes interview is just about universally negative.
Whoopi Goldberg said on The View, "He was always a dog."
In the 60 Minutes interview, Lesley Stahl asked Schwarzenegger, "Was that the only affair?"
"No. I had others," replied Schwarzenegger.
"So, it's a recurring issue," said Stahl.
"I'm not perfect," he said.
You could actually hear the studio audience at The View gasp after the clip was played. Barbara Walters said the person she really felt sorry for was Maria Shriver.
"There was a part of this interview that touches me the most because I care about Maria, was that she gave up her career when he became governor and that doesn't seem to bother him either," said Walters.
On CBS This Morning, Shriver's friend, Gayle King weighed-in, saying, "What is she supposed to do with this information today? I think that it's such a painful, painful time for the family. So when I hear the joking and the laughing, it's just very difficult."
During the 60 Minutes interview with Leslie Stahl, Schwarzenegger spoke for the first time about how his four kids reacted to the shocking admission that he had a son out of wedlock with the family maid, Mildred Baena.
"I think the girls were very upset, the boys were disappointed," said Schwarzenegger.
Stahl asked, "They have a half-brother. Do they have a relationship?"
"I don't want to go into those details," replies Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger's children have not commented on the book, but his 22-year-old daughter Katherine tweeted this: "Going dark on Twitter for a few days. See you soon! Xo."
He also revealed he had an affair with actress Brigitte Nielsen, his co-star from the movie Red Sonja. The year was 1985. Schwarnegger was living with Maria Shriver but they weren't yet married.
Stahl said, "You write that you had an affair with the actress in that movie. You cheated on Maria when you were in that relationship. And you don't even write that you felt bad about it. You just, write it."
"Actually, I did feel bad about it," he said.
Nielsen married Schwarzenegger's pal, Sylvester Stallone later that year.
In his new book, Total Recall, Schwarzenegger writes about the first time he met Shriver and the racy crack he made to her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. That portion of the interview aired on CBS This Morning.
Stahl asked, "Remember what you said to her about Maria?"
"Yeah. Something stupid, obviously. I said, 'Your daughter has a great ass.' I had a bit too much to drink," said Schwarzenegger.
Nora O'Donnel said on CBS This Morning, "Is that for real? Did I just hear that?"
Biographer Lawrence Leamer, who writes about Schwarzenegger on thedailybeast.com says Shriver is heartsick about the book.
"In his mind, it was the perfect time to write his autobiography. But it was a big mistake. He probably shouldn't have talked about the scandal. It is not Total Recall. There are many things that are not in this book," said Leamer. "Why did he have to bring this up? The children are very upset by this, and rightfully so."
But not everyone hates Schwarzenegger. He got a warm reception at a book signing in New York City Monday afternoon.
