Some Celebrities Say, No Kids For Me

Cameron Diaz is open about her decision not to have kids, and she's not the only celebrity making the choice. INSIDE EDITION has more on the hotly debated issue.

Actress Cameron Diaz is candid about her life without kids in the latest issue of Esquire magazine.

"It's so much more work to have children. To have lives other than your own that you are responsible for. I didn't take that on. That makes things easier for me. I was never drawn to being a mother," said Diaz.

Reaction to the article has been strong on both sides. Some have applauded Diaz for her honesty, but others see her decision as selfish.

"Lady, you are nearly 40,"  says one online comment. "I think it's probably time to start doing something about it."

Lyss Stern is the founder of www.divamoms.com. Stern told INSIDE EDITION, "I think it's up the women, up to us individually to say what's right, what's wrong, and what works for them. And I respect her for coming out and saying, you know what, she didn't want to be a parent. And that's her choice."

Hear More From Stern

Cameron Diaz is hardly alone. Lots of other big stars, including Oprah, have decided to remain childless. Oprah was once quoted as saying, "My kids would end up hating me."

Comedian Chelsea Handler says she just knows she's not the mothering kind. Handler joked in one of her stand up routines, "I think having a baby is a huge responsibility, okay? It's like a five year committment and you have to be ready for it."

She recently had actress Jennifer Westfeldt on her show. She's the longtime girlfriend of Mad Men's Jon Hamm and says they've mutually decided not to have kids.

Handler said, "I don't ever want to have kids and I don't like it when people tell you that you're going to change your mind about it."

We asked moms and dads what they thought. One mom said, "If it's not for you, it's not for you. But I think it's the greatest thing ever."

One dad said, "It's the best thing that ever happened to me, but I never would have known that before."

Elllen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi say they will remain childless. According to de Rossi, "You have to really want to have kids and neither of us did. So it's just going to be me and Ellen and no babies."

And George Clooney has said he would never have children.  Of course, he also said he'd never get married again. We know how that went.

Stern added, "Not everyone feels that dying need to be a parent and that's okay."
