Michael Bloomberg Becomes Honorary British Knight
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was made an honorary British knight by Queen Elizabeth during a ceremony at the British embassy in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
According to The Telegraph, he got some advice from his friend and fellow knight, Sir Paul McCartney.
Bloomberg said, “Back in New York, a friend of mine was reminding me: This is only an honorary knighthood – and it does not, in fact, make me either a knight or a commander nor does it come with the title, 'Sir'. I said, 'Thank you, Sir Paul McCartney.'"
The British ambassador to Washington, Sir Peter Westmacott said the billionaire was being honored due to his “prodigious entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors, and his contribution to UK-US relations.”
Bloomberg is not the only former New York City mayor to be knighted. Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani joined the distinguished club in 2002.
