Woman Claims: My Brother Was Sexually Abused by Dennis Hastert 'All Through High School'
A new bombshell has been revealed in the Dennis Hastert scandal.
“I asked him, when was your first same-sex experience? He looked at me and said, ‘It was with Dennis Hastert.’ I was stunned,” said a woman named Jolene Burdge.
She claims her brother, Steve Reinboldt, was sexually abused by Hastert when he was the equipment manager at the Illinois high school where Hastert was a wrestling coach in the 1970's.
“I said, ‘Was it all through high school?’ and he said, ‘Yes, all through high school,’" she said.
She revealed the stunning accusation to ABC's Brian Ross. It's the first time anyone has been publically identified in the growing scandal swirling around the former Speaker of the House, once second in line to the presidency.
Steve's sister said he told her about the alleged sexual abuse in the late 1970's, about eight years after he graduated. She asked him why he didn't go to police.
“He just looked at me and said, ‘Who is ever going to believe me?’" she said.
Burdge said Hastert was a father figure to her brother. He belonged to an explorer troop that Hastert took on a trip to the Bahamas. Reinboldt took a photo of the troop relaxing at a hotel.
In her brother's high school yearbook, Hastert wrote: "Steve, to a great, right-hand man."
“He damaged Steve more than any of us will ever know,” said Jolene.
INSIDE EDITION’S Diane McInerney spoke to Gary Matlock, who was a wrestler on Hastert's high school team.
"You must have been shocked by these latest revelations," said McInerney.
"I'm surprised. I'm disappointed. I hope it's incorrect," said Matlock.
Reinboldt died of AIDS in 1995. His sister said she couldn't believe it when Hastert showed up at the funeral home.
“I just looked at him and I said, ‘I want to know why you did what you did to my brother?’" said Burdge.
"He just stood there and stared at me and then I just continued to say, ‘I want you to know that your secret didn't die in there with my brother, and I want you to remember that I'm out here and that I know.’"
