Actor Dick Van Patten died Tuesday at a California hospital from diabetes complications.
One of TV's all-time favorite dads has passed away. Dick Van Patten, star of Eight is Enough, died at a hospital in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 86 from complications due to diabetes.

Van Patten remained humble about the long-lasting impact of his famous show.
He once told INSIDE EDITION, "30 years I can't believe it. They recognize me. They must have really liked - they did like that show."
He was a great friend to INSIDE EDITION, inviting our cameras into his home and sharing photos and mementos from his nearly 80 years in show business.
He appeared in a string of Mel Brooks comedies, including Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
He worked into his 80's, most recently appearing in the hit TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland.

He was also known for his love of animals, even marketing his own brand of dog food.
Van Patten leaves behind his wife Patty of 62 years and their three sons.
His publicist says, "He was the kindest man you could ever meet in life. A loving family man, they don't make them like him anymore."
