Dog Dials 911, Saves Her Blind Owner From House Fire

Maria Colon was in her home in Philadelphia last week when she awoke to the smell of smoke - and her dog promptly called 911.

A quick-thinking dog saved her blind owner from a fire by calling 911.

Maria Colon was in her home in Philadelphia last week when she awoke to the smell of smoke.

She yelled "danger!' and her service dog, Yolanda, dialed 911 on a specialized phone.

"I hear the phone... And she's growling. And I said, 'Oh my lord, she called the police,'" Colon told NBC4.

Firefighters received the call and took Colon to Nazareth Hospital, where she was treated for smoke inhalation.

Yolanda, a Labrador retriever, also went to Penn Ryan Veterinary Hospital with smoke inhalation and they were reunited on Friday night.

"I'm her Mommy, and she loves me too much," Colon said.

It's the second time Yolanda has come to the rescue: she managed to call 911 after her owner took a tumble and was knocked unconscious last year.

"Yolanda is a superhero!" Red Paw Emergency Relief Team wrote as they shared her story to Facebook.

The group, which helps animals displaced by fire and other residential disasters, took food, toys and treats to Yolanda after her heroic act.
