Fan Obsessed with Female Wrestler is Shot After Charging at Cops at WWE Center, Authorities Say
A man obsessed with a female wrestler was shot after charging at a deputy outside a World Wrestling Entertainment training center, authorities said.
The man, identified by reports as 29-year-old Armando Montalvo, suffered life-threatening injuries in the shooting in Orlando, Florida on Monday afternoon and underwent surgery, authorities said.
Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said there was a court order in place prohibiting the man from being there because he had been stalking a female wrestler.
On his social media profiles, Montalvo repeatedly mentions wrestler A.J. Lee. His last Instagram post, which was shared two days ago, reads: "i love u aj put me in your move forevermore!!”
In a photo on his Facebook page, he can be seen wearing a pair of sneakers with A.J. Lee's name written across them.
Lee wasn't at the facility at the time.
According to authorities, Montalvo entered the Performance Center around 1.30pm on Monday and created a "commotion." WWE staff alerted authorities and said the man had "some sort of knife."
Two officers responded to the scene and approached the man in the parking lot. Fearing that he had a knife, deputies drew their weapons, Demings said.
The man charged at one of them and a deputy, who has not been named, shot him, Demings said.
"Out of fear for his life, he believed this individual was going to close in on him and he was going to have some type of struggle over his gun and he fired one round," Demings said.
The WWE released a statement to say the man, who it called "deranged," had no affiliation with the wrestling organization.
"Unfortunately a deranged individual with no WWE affiliation, who had a court order prohibiting him from being on WWE property, was involved in an incident with an Orange County Sherriff's deputy in the parking lot of the WWE Performance Center. We defer to the Orange County Sherriff's department for further comment and information," their statement read.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
