Bretagne is the last known living search-and-rescue dog who worked at Ground Zero following 9/11 and to mark her 16th birthday, she received a hero's party in New York City.
The golden retriever and her owner, Denise Corliss, were part of Texas Task Force 1 and were deployed to Ground Zero on 9/11 to search the rubble of the World Trade Center.
After hearing Bretagne's story and learning that her 16th birthday was coming up, BarkPost decided to organize her an extra special day. BarkPost, the publishing arm of Bark & Co., has an on-going video series called "Dog's Best Day" to celebrate dogs - and Bretagne seemed one very deserving pup.
“There was no question in our minds that she deserved a Dog's Best Day for the ages," wrote creative producer Laura Hartle.
Speaking to INSIDE EDITION, Hartle added: "Bretagne's story really hit home for BarkPost since we are based in New York. To able to have the chance to thank one of the dogs who helped our city when we needed it most was an unforgettable experience."
Bretagne and her mom were invited back to New York City and were treated to incredible service and hospitality from BarkPost and 1 Hotels to mark the dog’s big day.
Bretagne devoured a gourmet cheeseburger, explored the city in a vintage taxi and played with toys to celebrate.
"The treats and food were the real highlight for her," Hartle said. "She ate the whole gourmet burger and almost all of her dog-friendly birthday cake and still rummaged through the pile of presents and treats at her party to pick out bags of treats for Denise to open! It was adorable."
And her owners were overjoyed too.
"There were a lot of happy tears from Denise," Hartle said. "It was very moving to see her and her husband, Randy, continually astonished by surprise after surprise."
She added: "When Denise said, 'I haven't had the opportunity to come to New York and just enjoy it like I did with this trip,' [it] was something I'll never forget."
Bretagne was one of nearly 100 dogs who worked in recovery and rescue following the terror attacks, according to BarkPost. The service of these incredible dogs has not been forgotten.
