Police say Jack Yantis, a well-known rancher, arrived armed to the scene of a crash after a car hit one of his bulls.
A well-known Idaho cattle rancher was killed by police this weekend during an encounter that started when a car crashed into one of his bulls.
Jack Yantis, 62, arrived to the scene of a crash involving a Subaru and his animal after police were called to the collision Sunday, the Adams County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

The injured bull became enraged as authorities pulled motorists out of their vehicle so deputies drew their weapons. Yantis also arrived on the scene armed, the sheriff's office said.
"The events that transpired over the course of the next few minutes are under investigation but, at this time, it is believed that two deputies and Mr. Yantis all fired their weapons," a release from the sheriff's office read.
The Idaho State Police have since taken over the investigation and the officers involved have been placed on paid leave per agency policy. One of the deputies suffered minor injuries.

Adams County Sheriff Ryan Zollman told KTVB the incident has been hard on area residents. Yantis was a well-known business owner and his death is believed to be the county's first ever police-involved shooting death.
"This is going to be a big hit to this community," Zollman said. "Mr. Yantis was a well-known cattle rancher around here. It's just a sad deal for everybody involved, for the whole community."
The two motorists who were pulled from the Subaru were transported to a Boise hospital. Their conditions were not released.
