A New York woman was sentenced after it was discovered she kept her mother's rotting corpse to collect Social Security and pension.
An Upstate New York woman was sentenced to jail time and community service for stashing away her mother's corpse while she cashed in the deceased woman's benefit checks, according to a judge.

Mary Kersting, 60, lived in the apartment above her 93-year-old mother, who passed away in October 2013.
Kersting never called authorities to get medical care or take away her mother's body, authorities said.
Instead, Kersting kept the corpse as it rotted in the apartment and cashed her mother's Social Security and pension checks, making off with almost $14,000.
Police found the body in December of last year when they went to check in on the elderly woman. It had been over a year since she had passed
Kersting was arrested and pleaded guilty to grand larceny, improperly disposing of a body and endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person.

Kersting was sentenced to six months in jail and 500 hours of community service on Friday.
