Contractor Claims Roof Needs $10,000 Makeover Despite Not Climbing Up to Check It
INSIDE EDITION's House of Shame series is putting more contractors to the test - this time to see if they give a fair deal for a roof that our experts say only needs minor repairs.
After hiding cameras throughout a rented New Jersey house, we had Ray LoVecchio, a home inspector with 30 years' experience, and Sal LaRosa, who has 20 years' experience in the home roofing business, check out the roof.
"The condition of the roof is good, it's in good condition," LoVecchio said.
LaRosa added: "If someone says you need a new roof, absolutely not, you don't need a new roof. Just some minor repairs, that's all."
In their opinions, the roof repairs should only cost between $400 and $600.
The first contractor walked around the roof and lifted some shingles, before picking off some loose ones. When he returned to the home, he had some bad news.
"It will be half a day to a day job, and it will be $1,800," he told INSIDE EDITION’s Lisa Guerrero, whom he believed was the homeowner.
From the control room, our expert said that estimation was excessive.
“$1,800 is a lot of money for a couple of hours of work,” Guerrero told him.
She then let him know she was with INSIDE EDITION – and after denying he was trying to rip us off, he left.
A second contractor spent time measuring and taking pictures but never once did he go on the roof.
“It may last another year or two,” he said. “Eventually you need a new roof.”
“I need a new roof?” Guerrero asked. “How much will it cost?”
He responded: “It can cost you $10,000… Roofs are expensive.”
Once she revealed who he was, she told him: “You are telling me from the street level that I should put on a new roof on my house for 10 thousand bucks. You didn't even go up there to see it.”
The contractor then said he was just recommending it as an option because "eventually it will get worse, you could have fixed it.”
If you’re looking to hire contractors to work on your roof, experts recommend you get at least three estimates and make sure they are licensed and insured.
