Martin Sheen Applauds Son Charlie's HIV Announcement: 'I Couldn't Believe the Courage'

The 75-year-old actor father of Charlie Sheen told a conference in Florida on Tuesday that he's proud of his son's shocking admission.

Martin Sheen, father of Charlie, has spoken out about his son's appearance on TODAY on Tuesday, in which he told the world he's HIV positive.

Sheen, 75, was in Naples, Florida just after his son's bombshell reveal, where he told CME Group's Global Financial Leadership Conference that he's proud of his son for finally coming forward.

"This morning, as I watched him alone, reveal his deepest, darkest secret, I couldn't believe the level of courage I was witnessing, and that it was my son," he said, according to the Naples Daily News. "I left him a message, and I said that if I had that much courage, I would change the world."

Charlie Sheen shocked the world this week when he told Matt Lauer he's been living with HIV for four years.

The announcement ignited contoversy after one of Sheen's "Goddesses," adult film actress Bree Olson, appeared on INSIDE EDITION to deny her ex-boyfriend's claims that he'd had unprotected sex only twice since his diagnosis.

"He says he found out when him and I were together," Olson said. "I was living in his house. We were having sex every single night."

Olson said she and Sheen frequently had sex without a condom.

Sheen told Lauer it was "impossible" that he could have infected anyone with HIV.

Sheen’s manager says Sheen was not diagnosed until after Bree’s relationship with him was over: “The truth is she wasn’t in Charlie’s life when he was HIV positive and so there was no reason to tell her anything. His diagnosis was long after.”

But in Florida, where the elder Sheen appeared onstage alongside actor Kevin Spacey, the controversy was not addressed.

"When someone comes to them-self, they have the moment of clarity, and they reveal their secrets — which all of us have — in public, it is a great sense of relief. It is a miraculous occasion," Sheen told the crowd of 300. " I hope that this day is the first day of the rest of Charlie's life as a free man."
