Graphic Video Shows Moment Med Student is Shot While Trying to Stop Attack

Tulane University medical student Peter Gold was shot in the stomach while trying to stop what appears in surveillance footage to be an attack on a woman.

Harrowing surveillance footage shows the moment a New Orleans medical student is shot and left to die after attempting to stop what appears to be an attack on a woman.

Peter Gold, a fourth-year medical student at Tulane University, spotted a woman being dragged down a sidewalk by a man in hooded sweatshirt on Friday and decided to do something about.

It was a decision New Orleans police say nearly cost him his life.

"The victim drove up and attempted to assist the woman at which point the suspect pointed a gun at him and demanded money," NOPD said in a statement.

In footage provided by the New Orleans police, 25-year-old Gold is seen outside the car with his hands up as the suspect points a gun a mere foot from him.

"[Gold] explained to the suspect repeatedly that he did not have any cash. The suspect became enraged and shot the victim once in the stomach," according to the statement.

But the suspect wasn't done. He appears to attempt to fire at Gold several more times. However, by a stroke of what is most likely life-saving luck, police believe the gun jammed.

The suspect got away with the woman's purse as footage shows Gold dragging himself helplessly across the cement.

The woman was unharmed. Gold was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but is expected to recover.

Meanwhile, with the suspect still at large, police are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the shooter's capture.

That's in addition to a $10,000 reward offered by Tulane University.

"I am shocked and saddened by this horrific event," university president Michael A. Fitts said in a statement. "I ask that you keep Peter and his family in your thoughts and prayers. He is an outstanding student who represents the best of Tulane in every possible way."
