8-Year-Old Burned Girl Gets Her Wish: Thousands Of Christmas Cards From All Over
Ask, and ye shall receive. Especially if you’re little Safyre Terry – and she received a lot.
The eight-year-old was horribly burned in a deliberately set house fire that claimed the lives of her father, her younger sister and her two toddler brothers in 2013.
So her aunt and legal guardian, Liz Dolder, put out a request on Facebook a few days ago. She didn’t expect much of a response.
As of Monday, Safyre had received more than 300,000 pieces of mail, Dolder told ABC News. And much of it – 195,000 cards and letters, to be exact, arrived on Monday.
Safyre, who has undergone a series of grueling graft surgeries, eventually lost a foot and a hand. Her body and appearance have been greatly impacted, but her young and tender heart remains unblemished.
"She’s a humble little girl," her aunt said. "She really is." She has been amazed by the response, her aunt said.
Safyre has also received 3,000 packages. A boy in Hong Kong sent his favorite teddy bear and a note that said “Let’s be friends.” Dolder said the bear would be returned to the child, along with another stuffed animal to keep the bear company.
"'Wow' is the general reaction in my family," Dolder said. We "never thought something like this was possible," she said.
In her hometown of Schenectady, New York, postmaster John Reilly said it took two two-ton trucks and a rented cargo truck to the mail to the child’s home, the network reported.
No one in the town has ever gotten this much mail, he said.
The family plans to lay all the cards on their lawn and take a photo with an aerial drone to post online as a thank-you note.
If you’d like to mail Safyre a card, her address is Safyre Terry, P.O. Box 6126, Schenectady, NY 12306.
