The Mississippi State campus is grieving this weekend after a student died after falling off the school's football stadium Jumbotron.

University officials have confirmed that Andrew Demboski plummeted to his death early Saturday morning during an ill advised climb atop the massive electronic scoreboard.

Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt said Demboski fell 18 feet from atop the Jumbotron to a concrete catwalk below.

Hunt told InsideEdition.com that the awning on top of the scoreboard is not built to walk on and it collapsed under Dembowski's weight.

He hit his head on impact but was alive when emergency crews were called at 1:30 a.m. However, the 21-year-old went into cardiac arrest as crews worked to get him down from the catwalk, Hunt said.

Efforts to resuscitate Dembowski failed.

According to Hunt, the investigation into the incident is ongoing, though he said authorities believe it appears to have been an accident.

Two other male students were reportedly at the scene when the tragedy struck.

Hunt would not comment on whether alcohol was involved, but said toxicology results would be forthcoming.

The death was confirmed in a statement from Sid Salter, MSU Chief Communications Officer.

"Our campus is saddened by this loss on the day of Spring Commencement, and we all mourn Andrew’s passing and are keeping his family in our prayers," Salter said.

Marissa Gonzalez, who identifies as Dembowski's girlfriend on Facebook, took the news particularly hard and expressed her grief in a lengthy post on the social media site Saturday afternoon.

"He was a very simplistic guy who made you laugh under any circumstance. That boy and I shared something that I only thought happened in fairy tales. Cheesy, I know but that was him. I love him more than words can say and appreciate all the love and prayers," she wrote.
