A former cop, who shot himself rather than be arrested following a police chase, was discovered to have the dead body of his wife in the trunk.

Police in New Jersey were notified by authorities in Rhode Island that 61-year-old retired Providence police officer Franklin Osgood was traveling the state turnpike in a state of distress.

Osgood was located by troopers, but initially refused to pull off the road, police said at Sunday news briefing.

His vehicle eventually ran off the road, at which point troopers approaching the vehicle discovered Osgood with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In the trunk, police say they found the body of Osgood's 55-year-old wife, Mary Jo Osgood.

Franklin Osgood was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Providence police said it was Osgood's daughter who called them Saturday to say her father was missing.

Providence police said Osgood joined the department in 1995 and retired in 2007.

Police said they were still investigating a motive for the crime.
