When Koa the pot-bellied pig was discovered, PETA officials noticed gashes on his body, including a deep wound infested with maggots. There even appeared to be a gaping hole in the middle of his left ear.

PETA said Koa may have been beaten by his owner with a crowbar and left to die.

He had run into the woods, terrified, before he was found the next morning. He quickly received medical attention.

In surgery, Koa had his ear removed and nearly lost an eye, but after weeks in intensive care, the piggy pulled through.

Koa, which means "warrior" in Hawaiian, spent the next couple months at Happy Trails Sanctuary in Ohio before a family living nearby heard about his story, and wanted to adopt him.

Now, Koa spends his days snuggling and napping with little Sophie and Miles, the two children of his adopted family.

The pot-bellied pig is often spotted in his spare time rolling in the mud, basking in the sun, or sneaking off with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Now that's one playful pig.
