This Invention Saved Mike Pence's Plane After it Skidded Off Runway

The runway incident could have been a disaster if not for an arrestor bed.

Mike Pence and his family can thank one invention for saving them from total disaster after their campaign plane skidded off the runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport Thursday night.

"Arrestor beds" are designed to stop an aircraft safely if it overshoots a runway. It's made of crushable concrete blocks.

Sixty-one U.S. airports have arrestor beds installed. The invention has so far prevented 11 tragedies in America, saving nearly 300 lives.

Pence's plane skidded off the runway at LaGuardia after landing in a downpour Thursday night.

The chartered jet came to a halt about a hundred yards from traffic. Some 40 people were on board, including Pence, his wife and daughter, as well as journalists.

Nobody was hurt in the accident. Donald Trump's running mate shook hands with emergency crews on the tarmac.

Pence stayed at a hotel in Manhattan Thursday night and described the ordeal during TV appearances Friday, calling it "10 seconds of uncertainty."

He had a new plane by Friday afternoon and took off from Newark, New Jersey, to continue campaigning.
