Blast From the Past: Inside the Production and All-Star Cast of 'Hairspray Live!'

Hairspray tells the story of young Tracy Turnblad, a teenager who just wants to dance on a local TV program.

The Universal Studios backlot has been transformed to look like 1960's Baltimore and features Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson as Motormouth Mabel.

Hudson told Inside Edition how she is preparing for the live performance.

“Live in the moment and let it be live and not I don't want to want to be over rehearsed," she said. "I just have to find my own niche. I will look at the others that came before me and see what they did with it. What their interpretation was. I walk away from that and then I said how do I ‘Jenniferize’ it?”

Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein reprises his Broadway role as Edna Turnblad, Tracy's mom.

"How could I say no to one of the biggest adventures offered to me? So I said yes," he told Inside Edition.

Maddie Baillio beat out 1,000 other hopefuls for the lead role of Tracy Turnblad.

“I just wake up every morning and I am on cloud nine,” she told Inside Edition. “I can’t believe this is actually happening to me."

Pop princess Ariana Grande wanted in the company so much, she called producers and put herself out there as Penny Pingleton.

“I feed off of everybody everyone around me,” the singer said.

That statement was echoed by co-star Kristin Chenoweth, who plays a former beauty queen.

"We feed off each other and the audience,” Chenoweth told Inside Edition.

She says the production will not only spark joy but also a conversation.

“I think that there is a demand for love and acceptance and unity with the younger generation is so adamant about it and angry, motivated and frustrated," she said. "This show expresses that in a beautiful way through music."

Hairspray Live airs Wednesday, December 7 on NBC.
