Some children have defied science, doctors and experts all year and have beaten the odds to survive and thrive.

In January, there was the story of a pair of Australian twins born 11 weeks premature. An image of them sleeping on their father’s chest and holding each other’s hands went viral.

Their proud mother, Anthea Jackson-Rushford, wrote on Facebook: "Both my angels holding hands again as if they were born to! Amazing sight!”

At the start of the year, one of the world’s smallest surviving premature babies ever born was celebrated for overcoming countless hurdles to become North Carolina’s most heartwarming success story.

After spending 307 days in a Nebraska hospital, a baby who was born weighing less than a pound was free to go home in November. Nathan was born at 24 weeks old and fought to live, and his loving parents were there every step of the way.

Jaxon Buell’s perseverance became something the whole world admired. The baby born in 2015 with part of his skull missing is continued to defy the odds. He celebrated his first birthday, was able to suck on a pacifier and inspired millions with the #JaxonStrong hashtag.
