Man Butt-Dials Police While Planning Restaurant Robbery: Cops

A man in Danville, Kentucky, accidentally dialed police dispatch while plotting a crime, cops say.

Two Kentucky men have reportedly landed themselves in jail when cops say they discussed a robbery plan after one of them accidentally dialed the local police dispatch.

Danville Police said the two suspects were sitting in a parking lot trying to formulate their plan in the town 30 miles outside Lexington when the call was accidentally placed.

According to the Danville Advocate Messenger, Danville Police Chief Tony Gray was finishing dinner at the time of the call.

"There was some conversation about when they should do it, they might be recognized if they do it in Danville, and I think they did talk about some different locations,” Gray was told, though he hasn't heard the call. "Somewhere in the conversation my name was brought up."

Dispatch called Gray at Brothers Barbecue and informed him of what had gone down as they worked to triangulate where the call was coming from.

And that's when the story got even weirder.

“When we stepped out back to talk, the dispatcher was able to pinpoint the phone," Gray said.

As luck would have it, the call originated from just outside the door.

"The call was coming from somewhere in the parking lot at Brothers. At that time, they located the two suspects sitting in the vehicle," Gray said.

Even stranger, Brothers Barbecue may have been one of the suspects' proposed targets, owner Mike Southerland said.

"They were just in earlier having a beer," Southerland said. "I saw a ski mask they’d taken from them and it was on the top of the car, and I thought, 'holy crap, they were seriously ready to do it.'"

Both men were charged with public intoxication and released on their own recognizance.
