A Maryland teenager was shot dead and her mother was injured Sunday in their own home and cops have fingered a 15-year-old boy as the culprit.

Howard County authorities say 16-year-old Charlotte Zaremba was killed Sunday in her own bedroom in Ellicott City at about 2 a.m.

Hearing the disturbance, police say Charlotte's mother entered the bedroom, where the suspect shot her before turning the gun on himself.

When police arrived, they found Charlotte suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to Howard County General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Suzanne Zaremba, 52, had suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound and was transported to Shock Trauma. She was treated and released.

The teen suspect remains in critical condition and his name has not been released. Police are not yet certain of his motive.

Another family member was home at the time of the shooting, but not injured. Police are continuing to investigate.

Meanwhile, Charlotte's loved ones are now left wondering, "why?"

"She was just really sweet, and a good friend,” Charlotte's friend Isabella Kushner told CBS.

Many students at Howard County High School, where Charlotte was in 10th grade, plan to wear black on Tuesday in their first day back from vacation as a way to mourn and honor their slain classmate.

"The entire community of Howard County is just trying to support everybody, and her family," Isabella said.
