While meeting a stranger on the internet is never advised, 10-year-old Lena Draper split a grilled cheese and tomato soup with a cop she messaged on Facebook late one night looking for help with her math homework.

Lieutenant B.J. Gruber surprised Lena at her school Tuesday after the fifth grader reached out to the Marion, Ohio, Police Department’s Facebook page as she struggled with her math homework.

"This is probably the most unique message I’ve ever had," Gruber told InsideEdition.com. "This is the exact environment we try to nurture — this sense among children that not only can you come to us if you have a problem at home or at school, if we have time, we can answer homework questions too."

Gruber explained he was manning the department’s social media account when she got a message from Lena: "I’m having trouble with my homework. Could you help me?"

"I thought they would know math, and they do," Lena told InsideEdition.com.

Sure enough, Gruber, who has been with the department for more than 20 years, wrote back and walked her through the equation.

"I love the idea of feeling like we’re meeting needs within the community," the father of four explained.

Lena’s mom, Molly Draper, later posted the interaction on Facebook, and as the post started gaining attention around their community, Lena kept Gruber up to date on their internet fame.

Gruber said his meeting with Lena on Tuesday was his way of showing her that the police department was supporting her every step of the way.
