During their joint bachelor/bachelorette party in Naples, two months before their wedding day, groom Brett Greenhill, 39, dove head first into the sun-kissed water and hit a sand bar in a freak accident on the beach.

He suffered a grievous spinal cord injury and was left paralyzed.

"He said, ‘I can't feel my body. I don’t know what's going on. I can't feel my body," Greenhill’s fiancée, Meg Alexander, 29, said.

"I told her, 'I love you. I'm sorry,'" he recalled to Inside Edition. "I tried to push her away."

At the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, he is undergoing rehab and showing remarkable improvement.

He is also beginning to regain some feeling after the intense therapy.

His occupational therapist at the Shepard Center, Kathleen Shanahan, told Inside Edition: “He's kept a positive attitude — which is amazing — through this whole thing. You don't see that in everyone.”

Greenhill's injury has presented a challenge, but they are dedicated to getting through it, together.

"He said, 'I understand this is not what you signed up for,'" Alexander recalled. "We need each other. Physically he needs me more. But spiritually emotionally I need him.”

For now their wedding is on hold but he and his bride-to-be remain an unbreakable team working together for the day when they walk down the aisle together.

"One thing I want people to know is love the people you love as hard as you can because you never know what can happen,” Alexander told Inside Edition.
