'Hamilton' Fan Proposes to Girlfriend by Recreating Hit Musical Number on Stage

"My fiance and I are huge fans of Hamilton, and I knew she would freak out if I incorporated it into the proposal," Elijah Essa said.

He picked up a pen, he wrote his own way into her heart.

A Hamilton fan wanted his proposal to his girlfriend to be memorable, so he gathered some friends, recreated the musical, and popped the question on stage.

“My fiancé and I are huge fans of Hamilton, and I knew she would freak out if I incorporated it into the proposal,” said Elijah Essa, 22, of Louisville, Ky.

Essa told InsideEdition.com that he had been thinking of proposing to Sarah Burnett, his girlfriend of five years and fellow student at Western Kentucky University, for the past year.

Inspired by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Essa and some friends decided to recreate the musical’s hit song "My Shot" on stage.

“We hit the ground running with practices,” he explained. “[She] thought it was going to be a presentation for a student organization we are both involved in.”

But, when he invited Burnett and 200 of their closest friends and family on opening night last month, it became clear that it was more than just the average student production.

Essa, taking the lead role as Alexander Hamilton, led his friends in song and dance, until the very end when a dancer could be seen in a video created by Sean Jacobson approaching Burnett, and leading her to center stage.

As the final note of "My Shot" rung out, Essa fell to his knees, and presented her with a ring.

And, she said yes.

“I think from the beginning of the performance, she knew what was happening,” he joked.

As for the musical’s original creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Essa said he hopes he will notice the grand gesture, and realize how inspirational his creations are

“You realize how Lin-Manuel has so much passion for the musical and everything that he does,” he explained. “It’s ten times more enjoyable knowing that he created this for a reason.”
