'Granny Gem Thief' With Rap Sheet Dating To The 1950s Is Arrested Again

Doris Payne, 86, has been arrested more than 20 times over the decades.

A famed jewel thief with a rap sheet dating to the 1950s has been arrested yet again.

Doris Payne's likeness--or, more specifically, her mugshot--has become nationally known over the years as she continues to rack up arrests into her eighth decade.

On Monday, the 86-year-old is accused of stealing several items in various departments throughout a Georgia Walmart store.

According to police, Payne was caught with a total of $86.22 worth of items inside her purse.

She was also wearing an ankle monitor from a previous arrest for shoplifting, CBS46 reports.

The alleged crimes in the Atlanta suburbs was a marked downgrade for an international thief known for absconding with dazzling jewels from exotic locales over the decades.

In fact, her many heists—including the theft of a 10 ½-carat diamond in Monte Carlo years ago—were the subject of the 2013 documentary The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne.

"There's never been a day, that I went to steal, when I did not get what I went to do," Payne boasts in the documentary.

More recently, Payne was accused of stealing a $2,000 diamond necklace from a store at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta.

After she missed that March 6, 2015 appearance, the judge in the case issued a bench warrant for Payne's arrest. She was later taken into custody on March 13.

Payne allegedly got up to her old tricks later that year when she was accused of pocketing jewelry at an Atlanta Saks Fifth Avenue.

Cops say she was caught on video walking out of the high-end department store after slipping a $690 pair of Christian Dior earrings into her pocket.

Despite her numerous arrests, Payne's age has worked to her advantage as it's unlikely that a judge would commit a woman of her advanced years into state custody.

Following her arrest this week, Payne was charged with multiple counts of theft by shoplifting. It is unclear when she will appear in court.
