Jury Rules in Favor of Taylor Swift in Groping Trial, Awards Her $1 in Damages

The pop star had accused a disc jockey of grabbing her "bare ass."

A Denver federal jury has sided with pop star Taylor Swift, awarding her a symbolic $1 in damages Monday over her claims that a DJ assaulted her by grabbing her bare bottom during a 2013 meet-and-greet.

Jurors deliberated for about four hours before announcing their verdict in Swift's countersuit against former radio host David Mueller, who had sued Swift and her mother, claiming the allegations had cost him his job.

Swift embraced her mom, Andrea, after the decision was read.

In a statement, the Grammy winner thanked her attorneys and the court Monday “for fighting for me and anyone who feels silenced by a sexual assault, and especially anyone who offered their support."

“My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard,” she said.

The “Shake It Off” singer had wept in court earlier Monday when she was accused of lying about being groped.

“Why would Ms. Swift lie?” Mueller’s attorney, Gabe McFarland, told the panel. “I don’t know. I’m sure she thinks it’s true, but the photograph shows otherwise.”

The now-famous photo showed Swift, Mueller and his-then girlfriend Shannon Melcher at a 2013 event. He claimed he merely jostled the celebrity while leaning in for the picture.

“This was not jostling,” the singer testified Thursday. “He did not touch my rib. He did not touch my arm. He grabbed my bare ass.”

Andrea Swift testified her daughter was visibly upset at the event and later confided she had been groped.

“I wanted to vomit and cry at the same time,” the mother said.

McFarland grilled Swift on the stand, asking why the front of her dress seemed undisturbed in the photo.

“Because my ass is located in the back of my body,” she answered.

Mueller’s former employer, KYGO radio, fired him two days after Swift’s staff reported the incident.

Swift was removed as a defendant in that filing on Friday by a judge who cited a lack of evidence.

The pop diva had sought only a token $1 in damages, saying she was suing on behalf of women who were subjected to groping and assaults.
