One Year After Botched Baseball Proposal, Why 'Dropped Ring' Couple Decided to Call It Quits

Playing Couple Engaged at Yankees Game After Ring Drops During Proposal Call it Quits

When Andrew Fox botched a proposal in front of thousands of baseball fans, perhaps it was a sign that the relationship just wasn't meant to be.

A year after the epic proposal fail went viral, the couple has revealed they've called it quits.

"We don't communicate and I like it that way," Fox told Inside Edition.

A year ago, Fox popped the question to Heather Terwilliger while at a New York Yankees game but dropped the ring. Even worse, the proposal was shown on the stadium's Jumbotron.

Strangers in their section scrambled to search for the ring while sportscasters watched in horror.

"Oh look at this poor guy," Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay said.

Terwilliger eventually realized that the ring had landed in the cuff of her jeans.

But the high-profile fail made them overnight viral sensations. It even led to an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where the couple was awarded $10,000 from Shutterfly for their "memorable moment."

But just a year on, the couple has broken up.

"Turns out she was a completely different person than who I thought she was," Fox told Inside Edition.

Terwilliger said: "I think he was more interested in the attention than anything else."

She said the problems started after their appearance on Ellen when she says Fox took off with the $10,000.

"I checked the bank balance and it said zero," she said.

Fox claims he offered the money back to the Ellen show but never heard from them.

Terwilliger took him to small claims court, where the judge awarded her half the money.

But there was another problem: It turned out that Terwilliger was legally married to another man. Fox said he was "blindsided" at the news because he thought she was divorced.

"I thought I would be spending the rest of my life with her and now all of a sudden I'm alone again," he said.

Terwilliger insists he knew all about her ongoing divorce.

Whatever the story, they both agree the ring drop was a sign.

"What happened after was unfortunate but I'm still glad I had the experience," Terwilliger said.
