Fiery talk show host Glenn Beck says he was heckled when he and his family went to see an outdoor movie in New York City over the weekend. INSIDE EDITION reports.
Glenn Beck fought back tears on his TV show, claiming he and his family were hassled at an outdoor movie in New York City's Bryant Park.
Thousands gather in the park on warm summer nights to sit on the lawn and watch a free movie.
Beck, his wife Tania and their daughter Hannah were attending this New York tradition for the first time for a screening of Alfred Hitchock's suspense classic The 39 Steps. Beck alleges that after the crowd turned ugly, their night of fun quickly became a nightmare.
"I swear to you, I think, if I would have suggested, and I almost did, 'Wow, does anybody have a rope? Because there's a tree here. You could just lynch me.' And I think there would have been a couple in the crowd that would have," Beck told his viewers.
Beck says that a woman on the next blanket began yelling at him.
"This one woman actually stood up, and pointed her finger at the four of us and said, 'We're in New York and we HATE Republicans!' " Beck said.
Then, he says, others joined in. The tension quickly escalated.
"The people that were sitting behind us 'accidentally' spilled an alcoholic beverage all over our blanket and all over my wife's back. They laughed about it and I thought to myself, 'Boy, mom and dad must be proud,' " Beck said.
Beck says that despite the "hostile" atmosphere, he and his family chose to stay until the end of the movie.
Now, Beck is speaking out on his TV and radio shows, as well as his website, about what he calls the "cowardly behavior" of the crowd.
But a 25-year-old woman who says she was sitting near Beck claims his version of the evening is not what actually happened.
The woman tells New York Magazine that Beck's two bodyguards were "unnecessarily prickly with the crowd" and said, "It was my friend who spilled the glass of wine…and I can assure you it was a complete accident."
Beck, however, says he and his family should be free to watch a movie in the park without being harrassed.
"These people were some of the most hateful people I have ever seen," he said angrily.
