The results are in for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's telethon that went on without Jerry Lewis as host, and the outcome may surprise you. INSIDE EDITION has the details.
No Jerry, no problem apparently!
His supporters said the Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon would crash and burn without the legendary comedian, but it actually brought in more money!
"It isn't possible Jerry to replace you sir, you can never be replaced," said Nigel Lythgoe.
Lewis's image was everywhere and the new co-hosts, Nigel Lythgoe, Nancy O'Dell, Alison Sweeney, and Jann Carl all paid tribute to the man who led the show for 45 years.
"Jerry retired from the telethon this year but of course he is here with us in spirit and in heart," said Carl.
In the end the telethon raised almost $61.5 million, up from $60 million from last year, even though the broadcast was cut drastically from 21 hours to just six hours!
Lewis was honored with a video tribute looking back over the years. But for some, it wasn't good enough.
His friend, comedian David Brenner spoke out on Fox News: "You don't turn around and tell that one man, you're useless, go out to pasture. Look what he did for these kids, how do you toss him out the door?"
Some are even skeptical about the amount of money the MDA claims it raised!
"I do not believe the numbers. It just makes no sense they could raise more money than last year in just six hours," said a fan.
Here's another twist, co-host Lythgoe claims Lewis was planning a surprise appearance! He says the 33-piece orchestra was ready for Lewis to come on and sing his traditional final song.
Lewis didn't show. But in a statement, his publicist said, "There was never a definite commitment from Mr. Lewis."
